CBN AND ITS APPLICATIONS

Cubic boron nitride cutting tools which have come to be known as CBN, are made using the same ultra-high temperature and high pressure techniques that are used to make PCD. It is a polycrystalline material made from cubic boron nitride instead of synthetic diamond. CBN has been available almost as long as PCD and has proven to be superior to turning with carbide or grinding hard ferrous materials. It is great on high speed steels (60 Rc), cold work tool steels (60 Rc), bearing steels (58 Rc), die steels (50 Rc), and induction hardened parts (55 Rc). Tools are made using techniques similar to those used to make PCD diamond tools. It is particularly important to use proper brazing and grinding procedures so that the full potential for increased tool life is achieved. Tool geometry, and in particular, proper edge chamfers are critical to good tool life. Neuber Industrial Diamond Company has been manufacturing PCD and CBN tools since 1965. We are well versed in the many applications that both products are suited for. Our many years of experience in making natural diamond tools have resulted in the best procedures for brazing, cutting and polishing PCD and CBN.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES
• Hard facing alloys
• Sintered iron
• Hardened ferrous alloy
• Grey cast iron
• Hard cast iron
• Powder metal alloys
Edge prep 20° x .008 with .0005 hone

SOME APPLICATIONS
• Automotive engine blocks - Cylinder Boring
• Brake rotors - O.D. Facing and Chamfer
• Transmission gears - I.D. Boring
• Steel mill rolls - O.D. Turning
• Cylinder head - Milling

These are just a few applications using CBN tipped solid and full top inserts. Typically they are used for hard ferrous materials (Rc 45 or harder) that are difficult to machine with carbide or ceramic or that require time consuming grinding operations.
